How to set your Toyota Safety Sense system Toyota UK Magazine

toyota adaptive cruise control

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) maintains a constant speed until your Toyota comes up behind another vehicle. ACC can then adjust your car’s speed to maintain a fixed distance to the car ahead. When the road is clear, ACC will accelerate to resume your previous cruising speed. With an active, available Remote Connect trial or subscription, you can select vehicle capabilities from your smart device (optional on LE grade).

Others work only within certain speeds and/or might not start to accelerate automatically. Enter your location below to see what highways support Advanced Drive. Advanced Drive utilizes HD-mapping localization, which allows the system to anticipate the road ahead. The vehicle can also follow a navigation route set in Mirai’s audio multimedia system. Under certain conditions, like road construction, Advanced Drive is designed to prompt the driver to take full control or will not initialize.

Learning how to use and implement them when it benefits you is wise. Adaptive cruise control is one of the newer technologies included with advanced automotive safety systems. Toyota entered the EV field for the first time with the bZ4X in 2023, and the electric SUV has the adaptive cruise control system as standard.

And when you’re in reverse, Rear Parking Sonar with Reverse Automatic Braking uses sensors on the rear bumper to detect obstructions behind the vehicle. If detected, the system can alert the driver with warning sounds and automatically apply the brakes to avoid a collision or reduce collision damage. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system is also designed to provide gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system is also designed to provide gentile corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance. While LTA is activated, the Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is designed to monitor the driver's inputs, such as steering operation. If the EDSS determines the driver is not attentive and the driver does not respond to prompts to resume control of the vehicle, it can bring the vehicle to a stop under certain conditions.

Older Toyota Highlanders before 2017 (down to 2001) had the conventional cruise control. Older Toyota Venza models before 2016 had the more-basic cruise control instead. Adaptive cruise control has been standard in the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid from 2017 onwards. Toyota RAV4 SUVs from 2004 to 2016 had the conventional cruise control, while those prior to that did not have the system.

The three-row midsize Toyota Highlander had adaptive cruise control in 2017 and onwards. Adaptive cruise control has been standard in every Toyota C-HR subcompact since the model’s 2018 debut. 2001 to 2017 models had conventional cruise control, while Toyota Camry sedans before that did not have the system. 2009 to 2016 Toyota Corolla models only had cruise control in the higher trims, while 2008 and earlier ones had the feature as optional equipment.

It’s part of the Toyota Safety Sense system and utilizes vehicle-to-vehicle distance control. The available Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) is designed to help look out for your safety. BSM warns you when a vehicle in the next lane enters RAV4’s blind spot on either side of the vehicle. And when you’re in reverse, RCTA helps detect vehicles approaching from either side, warning you with side-mirror indicators and a warning tone. Take the stress out of being in unfamiliar territory. 1-year trial subscription included on select models.

Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a set speed, but also adjusts speed automatically based on the car in front of you with no pedal input from the driver. The leader in hybrid technology, Toyota Prius, adopted the adaptive cruise control system as standard in 2017 and has maintained it since. Once only seen on luxury vehicles, adaptive cruise control has become standard in many models, including Toyotas. Road Sign Assist (RSA) recognises specific road signs and displays this information on your Toyota’s multi-information display. To keep you on the right side of the law, it will issue audible and visible alerts if necessary. In addition, RSA works with ACC to regulate your vehicle’s speed.

These systems have front-facing video cameras mounted on either side of the rearview mirror and use digital processing to extract depth information from the parallax between the two cameras' views. Radar-based sensors can be hidden behind plastic fascias; however, the fascias may look different from a vehicle without the feature. For example, Mercedes-Benz packages the radar behind the upper grille in the center and behind a solid plastic panel that has painted slats to simulate the look of the rest of the grille. It’s simple to make changes to the distance using this button on the right-hand side of the steering wheel. The cruise control stalk moves in several different ways, as seen in the photo below. It can be pulled toward the driver, push up or down, and pushed inwards using a button. To fully understand the system, I did some in-depth research myself. Recently, on a drive near Sedona, Arizona, I tested the Tacoma adaptive cruise control system for several hours.

What happens when a huge ship sinks? A step-by-step guide to averting disaster Oceans

cruise ship sinks 2023

Smart energy efforts have also been applied to the ship’s waste elimination, climate control and ventilation. An adults-only ship and the ninth cruise ship for Viking Cruises, Viking Saturn is an ocean ship, but is small enough that it can dock at ports where larger cruise ships just can’t. There’s a lot to look forward to in 2023, with new cruise ships coming from all your favorite cruise lines, from Virgin to Viking, Celebrity to Carnival. So, if you’re in the process of planning out your cruising itineraries for 2023, here are the new cruise ships you’ll want to check out. By implementing these lessons learned, the cruise industry can significantly enhance the safety and preparedness of its ships, ultimately ensuring a more secure and enjoyable experience for passengers. Passengers were informed of the worsening weather conditions, and the captain and crew closely monitored the situation.

Improving Ship Design and Safety Features

These regulatory measures aim to establish a more robust framework for ensuring the safety of passengers and crew members on board cruise ships. By holding cruise lines accountable and implementing necessary changes, regulatory bodies contribute to the overall improvement of safety standards in the industry. It is imperative for cruise lines to regularly assess and update their fleet to meet the latest safety standards. By conducting thorough inspections and implementing necessary upgrades, cruise ships can better withstand storms and minimize potential risks to passengers and crew. Other major cruise lines followed suit, conducting safety audits and implementing new measures to enhance passenger safety during extreme weather conditions.

Skillful Rescue and Safe Return

Video from the incident shared on social media, which already has more than 10,000 comments, shows guests onboard wearing life jackets and moving to one side of the boat as the craft lists dangerously to the other side. Later, guests are seen jumping into the water from the sinking boat as they try to reach other nearby boats. Local time Tuesday, two cargo ships — the Polesie and the Verity — collided, around 12 miles southwest of the German island of Helgoland, according to Germany's Central Command for Maritime Emergencies. Helicopters lift the flailing crew members to safety, while support boats unload any cargo that hasn’t already tumbled into the sea. It’s urgent – lithium ion batteries in electric cars risk exploding and most of the vehicles are stored in the hold. A Carnival spokesperson said that the cruise line determined Hill "jumped" from the ship "after an exhaustive on-board search and a review of security camera video."

It is unknown at this time whether additional tours for Blue Lagoon Island – which often include beach breaks, dolphin swims, snorkeling, and sting ray encounters – may be impacted over the next few days. Rough waves caused a tour excursion boat to sink and one cruise guest has died in the Bahamas while visiting a popular tour spot.

Improved Navigation Systems

The saw is fitted into a custom-built frame lifted by cranes and ferried to the wreck site. Over two days, its two legs are rigged into the seafloor on either side of the wreck. Within the frame, the wire is cycled at high speed through a system of pulleys and lowered, guillotine-like, into the metal hulk, shearing through it with an ear-splitting roar. The team of hundreds of engineers, crane operators, firefighters, labourers, divers and architects, must move quickly. In the meantime, a specialist team begins bleeding its 20-plus tanks of more than 300,000 gallons of fuel, as well as potential pollutants such as lubricants, gases and oily water and sludge.

A luxury cruise liner bound for Europe got diverted to a cargo-ship crash where several people likely died

She explained how she didn't understand what was going on at first, since she was on the top level of the boat, but as she looked over the edge, she saw water coming into the catamaran. A video captured by someone on a boat next to the capsized excursion ship filmed tourists wearing life vests screaming as people on the neighboring boat flung them life preservers. Someone in the video can be heard saying, "OK, OK, breathe" as someone standing on the side of the catamaran was filmed grabbing onto a rope as the boat was tipping over onto its other side. This means it will be dealt with under stricter requirements than vessels in south Asian shipbreaking beaches, where 70% of global ships end their seagoing lives. Looser regulations in these locations result in dozens of labourer deaths annually, and untold environmental impacts as pollutants leach on to beaches and into the sea.

Strengthening Passenger Education and Emergency Preparedness

These will include the Retreat suites, the cruise line’s VIP, exclusive area that provides private spots for dining, relaxation and more, away from the cruising crowds. The ship won’t be among the largest in the world when it debuts, but it will be Carnival’s largest to date, larger even than Mardi Gras, placing Carnival Jubilee just shy of the world’s current top 10 largest cruise ships. Resilient Lady appears in May 2023, when it’s expected that the cruise ship will take its inaugural sailing from Greece. In conclusion, the Carnival Sunshine storm incident of 2023 serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and responsibilities inherent in maritime operations.

Maersk commits 300 commercial ships in support of ocean and climate science

Reeta Sahani was on Royal Caribbean's Spectrum of the Seas with her husband on July 31 in the Singapore Strait, the last day of their four-day cruise to Malaysia. The tourist destination is located about three miles northeast of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. The spot is close to the deepest part of the Mediterranean Sea, and depths of up to 17,000 feet (5,200 meters) could hamper any effort to locate a sunken vessel.

Human Factors and Safety Procedures: Assessing Passenger Response and Crew Actions

"The only alternative would have been to take the more extreme step of canceling the cruise -- and thousands of people's vacations -- outright," MSC said. Passengers of a cruise who were expecting a sunny getaway in the Bahamas this week were instead sailed to a much colder climate due to severe weather. The spokesperson added that the Carnival Sunshine is now sailing on a five-day Bahamas cruise and will return to Charleston on Thursday. Another passenger, Christa Seifert-Alicea, said they didn’t receive word from the captain or crew for more than 12 hours. One traveler described being able to “smell people being sick walking down the halls,” the Daily Mail Reported.

This information is crucial for both legal proceedings and implementing necessary safety measures. The megaship, which features 19 decks, a three-deck atrium and a domed performance area, "sailed to Rotterdam, arriving this morning as scheduled," said P&O's Michele Andjel in a statement. It was a sombering detour for the British-flagged Iona, a luxury cruise liner which was en route to Rotterdam at the time of the crash. The boat was traveling from Paradise Island to Blue Lagoon Island, which is a popular tourist destination northeast of the capital of Nassau.

Regular safety audits and inspections play a critical role in identifying potential weaknesses and areas of improvement within a cruise ship’s operation. These assessments should be carried out by independent third-party organizations to ensure objectivity and adherence to industry best practices. The industry’s response to the Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident demonstrates its dedication to learning from past mistakes and prioritizing passenger safety. Cruise lines are continually striving to ensure that incidents like this are minimized, if not completely avoided, in the future. Carnival Cruise Line, in particular, undertook a comprehensive review of their emergency response procedures and made several improvements based on lessons learned from the incident.

Jennifer Morris is an avid solo travel adventurer who founded Solo Traveller after many years of journeying on her own around the world. Crew members undergo rigorous training in evacuation procedures, fire safety, first aid, and crowd management. Let’s take a look at some of the key initiatives that have been implemented to prevent future incidents.

Now reduced to molten steel, some of the MS Seascape might be forged into yet another ocean-going colossus. As shipbuilding ingenuity grows, so will the effort, costs – and the innovation – required to salvage these leviathans at sea. Some with relatively minimal damage, such as the Costa Concordia, can be patched up, fully refloated with caissons, then towed away. Instead, the removal team opts for a thick cable of diamond-encrusted wire that can slice through inches-thick steel.

Additionally, regulatory bodies have called for increased transparency and accountability from cruise lines regarding their safety protocols and contingency plans. In the wake of the Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident, cruise lines across the industry have taken proactive steps to address safety concerns and reassure passengers of their commitment to their well-being. The Carnival Sunshine Storm Incident of 2023 left a lasting impact on the passengers who were on board the ill-fated cruise ship.

Many passengers have shared their harrowing experiences of the storm, recounting the terrifying moments when the ship was tossed around by powerful waves and buffeted by strong winds. Meanwhile, rescue vessels were dispatched to assist in the evacuation of passengers if necessary. The crew’s training and preparedness were put to the test as they worked diligently to keep everyone safe. This article delves into the details of the Carnival Sunshine storm incident, providing a comprehensive analysis of the events that unfolded, the potential risks involved, and the lessons learned from this near-disaster.

For the first time ever for Oceania, the ship will offer a new category of concierge-level staterooms that are designed with solo travelers in mind. Dramatic new “Signature Spaces” offer carefully designed rooms with the idea that there’s a space on the ship for every mood and every purpose. If you’re considering traveling on a Viking ship for the first time, when Viking Saturn debuts, it’s worth noting that the cruise line is definitely a more refined one, with a thoroughly adult vibe.

If you're a family with children looking for a weekend cruise from Florida, you'll also be spoiled with choices. This Central Florida port is home to some of the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ships including the Carnival Magic, Norwegian Epic, and Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. Royal Caribbean’s new Utopia of the Seas, dubbed “The World’s Biggest Weekend,” will also be making its home port in Port Canaveral in the summer of 2024. On land, Royal Caribbean delivers unique adventure tours and guided excursions that satisfy all types of travelers. Swim with stingrays in the Caribbean, hike through glacial waterfalls in Alaska or see the view atop the Rock of Gibraltar.

Its growing fleet of innovative, stylish ships is relaxed, elegant and upscale with a broad appeal that attracts everyone from honeymooners to families to couples celebrating golden anniversaries. All of the table-service restaurants on Scarlet Lady are included in your cruise fare. To secure your preferred mealtimes, book dinner reservations through the Virgin Voyages app as soon as you can.

Holland America is known for its elegant ships and longer itineraries, such as Rotterdam's nine- to 16-night Southern Caribbean options out of Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship in the fleet, Rotterdam sails to Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and Half Moon Cay on nine-night voyages, while its longer 16-day sailings add on Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, and Key West. With so much to do on board, plus the short sailing times, cruises on this ship can have a distinct party vibe. There's a reason that the College Party Cruise charter company uses Freedom of the Seas for its March spring break sailings. The quickie voyages take you to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and a day spent on Royal Caribbean's stunning island is reason enough to book this cruise.

There's only one thing better than a trip to the Sunshine State — and that's the wide variety of weekend cruises from Florida that allow you to mix a sailing with a little time in Florida itself. Best of all, cruising is a relatively all-inclusive option no matter which sailing you choose, with transportation to various ports, food, entertainment and your place to stay all part of the fare. Escape the winter chill and head off to an Eastern Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale.

7 Best Cruises to Alaska, According to Travel Experts

best ship to cruise alaska

Roughly 1.5 million people visit Alaska on a cruise ship each year, according to the Cruise Line International Association Alaska. With an expedition heritage that dates back to 1896, it’s no wonder Hurtigruten Expeditions found its way to Alaska. The cruise line with a keen focus on exploration, adventure and science has two of its hybrid technology ships—MS Roald Amundsen, built in 2019, and MS Fridtjof Nansen, built in 2020—sailing the waters that surround The Great Land. Each of the ships features an observation deck, library, science center, hot tub, pool and Explorer lounge, as well as a bar with floor-to-ceiling windows so you never miss a thing. An expedition team of Alaska experts join each voyage, hosting lectures about the areas the ships visit and guiding passengers on outings like nature walks through rainforests and kayaking trips around the foot of a glacier. Guests learn about the cultural heritage of remote communities and focus binoculars to spot bears, whales, caribou, moose, deer, wolves, birds and more.

Best Inside Passage Alaska Cruise: Hurtigruten Expeditions, MS Roald Amundsen

Once again, Holland America is at the top of the most popular list, along with Princess Cruises. Both operate a suite of services for those wanting to explore on land, including lodges, trains, motorcoaches, and the popular Denali National Park. UnCruise Adventures is a sustainability-focused line traveling the waters of the Inside Passage. Culture, regional cuisine and nature adventures are the top themes, with ports of call in the decidedly less touristy spots. At any given time, you will have an abundance of choices based on your interests.

According to T+L A-List travel advisor Ashton Palmer, the Alaska cruise season is short (typically from May to September) and availability is limited, which is why travelers should plan their sailings six to eight months ahead of time. Several cruise lines also offer land extensions (sometimes called “cruisetours”) to make the experience as seamless as possible. Alaska cruises first made their debut in 1881, when the Pacific Coast Steamship Company began cruising the Inside Passage aboard its two ships, the Ancon and the Idaho. Today, with over 20 cruise lines and small ships sailing Alaska’s waterways, there are plenty of options for travelers to choose from during the Alaska cruise season, which runs every year from April through October.

When to book an Alaska cruise

There are also lectures and professional guides to complete the experience. Oceania Regatta prides itself on fine dining and an upscale yet comfortable ambiance. The 684-passenger ship features creations of celebrity chef Jacques Pepin in the main dining room and two surcharge-free specialty restaurants.

Lone travelers can also meet their shipmates while waiting to hop into a race care on the ship's go-kart track, at a showing of "Jersey Boys" or over a muddled drink at the Sugarcane Mojito Bar. Cabins are designed with families in mind and include split bathrooms (one with a toilet and sink, the other with a shower/tub combo and sink), as well as sofabeds and bunks to sleep four in a cabin. Disney-themed restaurants and attentive wait staff take the stress out of family mealtimes. King's Blues Club, play a game of pickleball on the outer deck or enjoy fine dining at numerous restaurants serving sushi and Asian cuisine, steak, seafood, Italian fare and Dutch treats. Seas in Alaska are choppiest on Gulf of Alaska itineraries where waters are open.

Regatta offers sailings out of Vancouver, Seattle, and Los Angeles with 7-night to 13-night itineraries. There are both round-trip and one-way sailings with Oceania so there’s a lot of variety of options there as well. Even though Holland America and Celebrity consider themselves to be premium cruise lines some of their older ships offer some of the lowest rates you can find. And if you’re traveling with a family of various ages you might want to consider a cruise on one of the mega ships that can keep everyone entertained, even teenagers. Princess Lodges is actually a part of Princess Cruises so you can get your cruise and land portion of your trip all under one roof.

Do you need a passport to take a cruise to Alaska?

In Alaska, NCL offers passengers countless off-ship activities to choose from. Many of the sailings to Alaska center on the state’s major ports of call, like Juneau and Sitka. There’s nothing wrong with those itineraries, but they do tend to focus more on touristy downtowns and less on the great outdoors. Extend your cruise vacation, and simplify your travel plans with a hotel stay at the beginning or end of your cruise. With a Cruise Plus Hotel Package, a Princess representative meets you at the airport and pier, transporting you to and from your hotel.

Best value Alaska cruise: Radiance of the Seas

But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle. For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. "Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords," said Cicero. Carnival Miracle also offers several 10 and 11 night sailings out of San Francisco that visit places like Prince Rupert, Ketchikan, Tracy Arm, Juneau, Skagway, and Icy Strait Point.

With no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska or North America, it is truly a protected destination. Founded as a gold mining town and now the state’s capital, Juneau has one foot in history and one in the future. Embark on a whale watching tour, or sail past Mendenhall Glacier on an Alaska cruise. When you cruise to Alaska with Princess, sail through one of the most iconic locations in the Great Land — Glacier Bay National Park. Listen to Margerie Glacier’s signature crack and boom rumble across the waves.

Alternatively, Inside Passage cruises in Alaska tend to be calmer as the waters are protected. One-way Gulf of Alaska itineraries are the best option for Alaska touring, as they begin or end in Alaska. The advantage of small ships is that they're more nimble than big ships, putting destinations like the Alaska Native village of Kake, the Wrangell Narrows and other tiny inlets within reach. Cruises through Alaska's gulf also tend to pass through the Inside Passage, with typical stops including Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan.

A concession plan announced in 2019 limits the visits of cruise ships to two ships per day. Cruise lines must be granted permission from the park authorities to carry passengers to this region. Currently, these include Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Uncruise Adventures, Viking Ocean, and a few others. This agreement will be in effect until 2030, so if you want to make Glacier Bay a part of your cruising experience you can look to book with one of these cruise lines. Below you can compare cruise itineraries for all ships sailing to Alaska for the next few years.

The ship's captain has the flexibility to seek out the best remote islands and bays for beachcombing, tide pooling, hiking and kayaking adventures. Alaska has become a hot spot for multigenerational family travel, with grandparents taking their kids and grandkids of all ages on a memory-making holiday. Princess Cruises is a line that offers something for everyone, and its Alaska-based Discovery Princess is our top choice for family reunion groups.

Humpback whales can be found in the waters of the Gulf of Alaska and are some of the most frequently spotted, though you may also see orcas and gray whales as well. Kids won’t enjoy Regatta as much as they might one of the mainstream ships, but the Alaska Explorer Youth Program is enriching and fun – so you can still enjoy a grander ship when travelling with your children. A Carnival Miracle cruise to Alaska is perfect for families or for those who want to balance the amazing experience of the destination with a fun-packed sailing. You’ll be able to enjoy a host of live music and comedy, kids will love the Camp Ocean clubs, and adults can escape to the Serenity Retreat when they need a little bit of peace.

No formal nights mean the pressure to dress up for dinner is dictated by fellow passengers, not the cruise line. Seven Seas Explorer is an all-suite ship, and every suite has a balcony with at least 252 square feet of prime Alaska viewing space. This is an all-inclusive luxury ship attracting both mature couples and a few affluent families.
